Yale Medical Students Neighborhood Health Project

This project is one of several avenues the NHCMA is exploring to foster involvement of members in volunteer efforts in our county, as well as to increase participation with health care students in our area.

Neighborhood Health Project is a student run volunteer organization whose goals include disease prevention and increased health awareness among the residents of New Haven.  We have tried to address these goals by forming a partnership with a local New Haven food pantry that distributes donated food every Saturday morning to any local residents that acknowledge need.  The pantry is located on the corner of Olive Street and Chapel Street in New Haven.

Our organization attends the food pantry approximately twice a month (Saturday morning from 9-11am) and provides glucose testing and hypertension screenings to any clients that desire those screenings.  We usually serve approximately 25 clients each Saturday morning we attend.  If a client exhibits elevated glucose levels or hypertension, we council that person on the meaning of the test and test results, as well as educating them on the disorders.  Since many of the clients do not have access to routine health care, we also refer them to local free health care clinics and the community health care van of New Haven.

In addition, the Neighborhood Health Project provides basic wound care and can address and educate clients on seasonal health complaints, such as seasonal allergies and cold care.

We are in great need of physicians that would be willing to donate their time to help our program.  The program is staffed by first and second year medical students.  Although we perform the basic screenings, we need a physician present to help us answer questions that we are not qualified to address.  For example, what to do if a client presents with severely elevated blood pressure levels.  Or, what to do if a patient comes to us with moderately elevated blood pressure and severe headaches?

We neither write prescriptions, nor do we dispense drugs to visitors.  We simply need a physician to be present to consult us on some issues as well as to teach us to improve our techniques and be better doctors.  This is a new group that means a lot to the medical students who attend as well as to the patients whom we see regularly -- your help would be greatly appreciated.
